Probably should also let your coffee pot sit on the burner for 30+ minutes so you get that signature Starbucks overroasted flavor.

Recently I've been drinking coffee black from a roaster Doof recommended. When I went to reorder they were down for maintenance so I went to the grocery store where I buy whatever is on sale. Welp it was Starbucks so I bought a pound of Italian roast that was so fucking bitter I added cream and a bit of sugar. I finished it up today and have a fresh pound from Kensington so I plan on drinking it straight going forward.

Harris Teeter (a Kroger owned subsidiary apparently) has a house brand of Southern Pecan (ground is all that I have seen) which has become my go-to coffee. Throw in a dash of cinnamon and presto, you have your own "house" brand!

It's drizzling here, so no car washing. I'm hanging out with the cats; going to call Miss Linda in a bit, and we may go over to Tar-zhay for a few things, and maybe a coffee and croissant stop later in the morning. Possibly I might drive over to the wheel-and-tires shop and inspect some polished rims for the Buick. Dunno yet.

Any disagreement between the states, whether about election law, constitutionality, or even how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop, must be adjudicated by the Supreme Court. If the Supreme Court will not perform this function it is dysfunctional, malfunctioning and not functioning and makes itself a Constitutional nullity.

I was a witness in a traffic case years ago. While I was in the courtroom waiting for my particular case to come up, the judge was dealing with a clearly long-time customer whom was suppose to take action on previous events. He was becoming visibly agitated with him. When he asked the miscreant "Why didn't you do (whatever) - I got you three chances? The guy said "I forgot."
The judge said in reply: "You'll remember next time - 90 days!!"

McDonald's has consistently hands down had the best coffee IMO. Plus if you have the app you can usually get any size coffee for a buck.

Last night, I tried Clyde May’s Alabama Style Whiskey Special Reserve 110 Proof. Years ago I'd tried their original CM Alabama style Whiskey when it first came out at a more typical proof. Originally, CM whiskey had a pretty little story attached to it that was apparently 99.9999991% baloney. The salient point being that CM was a bootlegger who finished his whiskey by throwing a bunch of oven-dried apples in the barrel and letting them do their thing to give his brew a better flavor and more smoothness.
But, that's not what CM does these days it "finishes" their whiskey with "apple essence" which could be anything from a glug of concentrated apple juice to a handful of Jolly Rancher Sour Apple candies thrown in the keg.
Anywho, the earlier iteration was okay. Fairly, appley but not overwhelmingly so with a bottom level Jim Beam thing going on. The Special Reserve however was quite good. Apple dialed down but still a smooth fruit bomb. Very much an idiot's delight whiskey. One where you can fill a glass with or without a cube and sit in your rocker or watching TV or stare at your glass and go "duhhhhhhhhhhhh" cuz nothing's going to bother you or challenge you from the glass. Just relax with your eager puppy whiskey that's trying to please you. It tastes like it'd make a good mixer ass well.
My problem comes in cause I hate flavored bourbons/whiskeys as a general proposition. Some are okay but nothing I really want to buy. And while I really like the idea of barrel finishing with oven-dried apples, I'm not so hot on the Jolly Rancher scenario. Basically, CM wants a premium price for a flavored bottle of booze. I'm not inclined to buy.
So, thinking about what you like in bourbons/whiskeys, am I being too persnickety or upholding standards against the joe Biden of Whiskeys - all hype and artificially enhanced with additives.
Your call, morons!

-----------------------------I love the McDonald's app. Input the order before I leave the house (though they don't prepare it until you get there). Of course, that doesn't stop screw-ups, and occasionally the app fails me, but those have been rare.
The only downside I recently discovered is that they don't allow payment by Arch Card (the McD's gift card). My preference would be to use the card in the app, rather than one of my credit cards (this is what I do with the Dunkin Donuts app).

Thought I could lurk and learn procedure, in parallel. That's an excellent idea. I would suggest checking to see if there's a local repeater that carries NTS traffic, and leaving the radio tuned to those so you can hear the protocol and conventions for passing traffic. The FT-60r (or any HT) can be a perfectly usable base station for local repeaters, just add a power brick to get you off the battery, a handheld mic so you can transmit without having to hold the radio, and a magmount dual band car antenna so you can play around with placing the antenna and not have to worry about keeping the radio held just so.Posted by: Duncanthrax at April 17, 2021 09:46 AM (DMUuz)
The basics of net etiquette will be very familiar from IC procedure, I think. Most of the basic electronics and theory questions should be no problem for a nuke school graduate. The only stuff that you can't work out from a formula or common sense is the FCC regulation questions.

I think it would be nice to see the funeral of Prince Phillip if only for the pomp and circumstance and, (I assume they will have them) the old hymns. I went to a lovely service at a friendly evangelical church in PA last Sunday, but they did praise choruses none of which I recognized, but I guess younger churchgoers have no connection to older hymns and like having a band.

Big Government see the success of the middle class in using education to build wealth, businesses, and stability. Throw over a TRILLION AND A HALF at getting people into college. Many do not have the education (K12) or the discipline or the intelligence to get a degreed program that add value to them, to others, and to the economy. The entire experiment fails and will destroy the economy.

We started a series that so far has proven very entertaining.
"Bad Guys" on Netflix.
It a Korean series about a disgraced cop who gets called back when the regular cops can't catch a serial killer. The cop forms a team of criminals (sort of a mini-Dirty Dozen) consisting of a hit man, a brutal thug, and a genius serial killer.
The stories play out as a kind of police procedural where al-l-l-l-l the hunted criminals get very satisfying beat downs as they are the most unsavory types of scumbags - serial killers, human traffickers, kidnappers, organ thieves.
The actors are all good. Direction and action are good.
Check it out.

Poisonous and addictive both? I'd say that's kind of harmful. That said, pipe smoking *in moderation* is a lot better than ciggies. Somebody who puffs a pipe all day every day is asking for lip or mouth cancer, yes, but a pipe once or twice a week is pleasant. Seems to me I've read that the infamous Surgeon General's report of 1964 noted that pipe smokers seemed to have a longer lifespan than either cigarette smokers *or nonsmokers*.

Some people seem to have the idea that they won't bother with getting licensed because when TSHTF they'll just pull out the radio that they chose based on some web searches and start reading the manual, but it's a lot more complicated than that. Even in an environment where nobody's policing the bands, there's more to it than just tuning to a frequency and talking like we're used to from the GMRS and FRS radios that come two to a blister pack. Studying for the test, listening to traffic for a few weeks, and getting some transmit experience is the way to go, even if you pack the radio away and don't use it after that.

Does CHIRP work here?I think CHIRP is a universal package that programs a whole array of radios, so long as you have the USB interface for that radio. You don't strictly need it, but it's a lot easier to program your local repeaters by looking at a table of frequencies and offsets and PL tones than it is to do it all on the radio itself, by a long shot.Posted by: Duncanthrax at April 17, 2021 10:29 AM (DMUuz)
That said, some radios do have hidden settings that can't be changed with the front-end interface but that CHIRP can see; I don't know if the ft-60r is one of them because I don't have one.
Glad to hear you're happy with HRO, I've bought quite a bit of stuff from them and never dealt with customer service (but then, never had to either).

Publius took his dad to the dr. the other day (I dislike that dr.) and he tsked about him not getting the CCP virus vaccine. If I'd have been there, I would have said, "Why? He doesn't go to bars and make out with strangers, and neither do we. And we're the only people he's exposed to."

My quit story is similar except when I recovered from the flu all of a sudden I could smell the stale smoke stench of my tiny apartment, and it disgusted me. I thought if my habitat smelled like smoke, I must stink of it too. So I quit that day cold turkey.
(I was young, so had a lot more determination and discipline.)

I just know we kicked the bloody British out of this country for a reason. And yet the tendency for snobbish deference to elites is strong. Needless to say, we've created our own here, so for me this tendency to ooh and ah at pomp is particularly bitter and ironic.

Last spring there were reports from Europe that smokers were less susceptible to the 'rona, since their receptors are damaged from smoking and the virus doesn't attach so easily.
As you can imagine, that kind of information is not allowed to be disseminated.

Yes. The High Mass really seems like giving glory to God.
That's why on the rare occasions when I've gone to other denominations' services, I find them unsatisfying or flat out goofy. YMMV, of course.
The same applies for the Vatican 2 inspired guitar masses. Just....bleh.

One set of drug pushers (Big Pharma) getting competition from another set of drug pushers (Big Tobacco). Like mafia families, you can't have them horning in on your racket.
You know, for a while there they were saying the homeless were not getting the Covids anywhere near the numbers they were expecting. I wonder if crack and heroin and meth might be natural blockers of the China crud. I think we all here should do our own experiment. I'll take crack. Who wants to try heroin/meth? Does CHIRP work here?Posted by: Duncanthrax at April 17, 2021 10:29 AM
I think CHIRP is a universal package that programs a whole array of radios, so long as you have the USB interface for that radio. You don't strictly need it, but it's a lot easier to program your local repeaters by looking at a table of frequencies and offsets and PL tones than it is to do it all on the radio itself, by a long shot.
That said, some radios do have hidden settings that can't be changed with the front-end interface but that CHIRP can see; I don't know if the ft-60r is one of them because I don't have one.
Glad to hear you're happy with HRO, I've bought quite a bit of stuff from them and never dealt with customer service (but then, never had to either).Posted by: hogmartin at April 17, 2021 10:33 AM
I haven't looked at it in a while, but I recall that the list of hardware in CHIRP is rather extensive. If you can connect it, odds are tremendous that CHIRP can service it

I made English fansubs of a movie about the founder of the Red Cross, Henri Dunant. His first humanitarian effort was after the battle of Solferino, where he got all the injured packed into church which served as a temporary hospital. And it's true, he insisted everyone had to smoke cigars - he may not have known about germs, but he knew that smoke would keep the flies away from all the open wounds.

I quit chewing tobacco many years ago, "cold turkey." The concern with any nicotine replacement strategy is eventually you're going to have to quit the nicotine. Whether it's all at once, or just that small amount, eventually you gotta get to zero, and your brain is going to rebel against it.
So good luck. Anything more than zero is not good.

LOL, probably not. Chuck won't let that happen (no matter how much Harry deserves it).
I remember when Princess Stephanie (Grace Kelly's daughter) was living in the U.S., getting impregnated periodically by random dudes of low repute, her dad reportedly found out she was living in some dump at one point and he set up her up with a $50,000 a month allowance so that she could at least pay for the "basic necessities" of life. LOL. The rich (and that includes the rich royals) are different.

And Kate says, " How are you supposed to suck on a lozenge without swallowing?"
Then William says, "Well, the sucking is the important part. Really quite lovely. I'm not sure it matters what happens with the...um, residue afterwards."
Then, Harry says, 'Well, how am I supposed to suck the lozenge when Meghan keeps sticking her's up me bum."

I almost did that before in college at all places Shakey's Pizza. I had set down my drink down next to the video game I was playing and subsequently reached for it without looking and grabbed somebody's abandoned spit cup.

depends on where you live. When the bar says "no dip cups" you know you are in the South or Texas. i myself drank from my friends spittoon. We were too young, too drunk, and made the mistake of using the same glasses. i pride myself on puking only hours later. And the beer was Colt .45, we didn't know any better.

i appreciate the recco. i did buy some books by Scott Hahn years ago. i am a Presbyterian, the same religion as my parents. But our church was an outlier, it was conservative in a church that was nominally liberal but had little actual control over individual churches. Things have change now, just like the much of the country has changed. it is a time for discernment. I can't go back to something I no longer believe in. The problem is not me, it is them. yeah that sounds trite, but it is true. They changed and warped the church, i did not change.

Colt 45 rounds are $2.00 a piece and climbing, and that is for the crap mouse fart cowboy loads. Good defensive loads are $5.00 each with strict limits.

I knew a very good Marine who was an alcoholic in his later days. He quit i think a year before he passed away. At his funeral, his family kept talking about the alcoholism. There is something about that that bothered me. The guy made a choice to quit. Sure he passed, but I don't know the reasons. He deserved more respect imo. This guy was a grunt in Korea and an officer aviator in Vietnam. You don't see that every day.

Re the comments on the Pew poll, how scary is it some people believe Joe is doing well? Amazing how many people Trump mentally broke.

I went digging on that poll...
For this analysis, we surveyed 5,109 U.S. adults in April 2021. Everyone who took part in this survey is a member of Pew Research Center American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses.
And....
52% Dem - 3,253
43% Rep - 1,706

Anyone who uses dip long enough will have had more than once accidentally drank from their own spit cup. Especially if one consumes alcohol as well.
Thankfully, both are in my past.

The media is telling them things are fine, and that has more power than the price of groceries or total on the pump. And then shit will go wrong and these dunces will be stunned and go "where did this come from?!" Like the person who is stunned when they are fired or their spouse files for divorce, cause they didn't think all those warnings given earlier were that serious.

don't worry about it, just do it your own way. something some don't get about tobacco, not the Horde mind you, is skin is porous. It doesn't matter if you spit, swallow, or inhale. our skin is porous. There is a reason cigar smokers who don't inhale can't give it up. There is a reason why dippers are super addicted, maybe more than some smokers. The stupid old wives tale about dip having glass in it proves the point. People don't understand how nicotine goes into our system. Whether you smoke cigs, cigars, dip, or even sniff snuff, the nicotine gets in. That is true to pipes as well.

The are some parishes which celebrate "Traditional" Latin Masses which are not in Communion with the Church. Prominent among these is the Priestly Society of Pius X, using the post-nomials of SSPX, although there are others.

he chose to quit. He made that choice, regardless of how long he lived after that choice. You said it best, and you would know. I think what you said was a very powerful honorific for a life well lived. You had a good dad, as did I. We are lucky in that way.

i used to follow the tobacco companies for investment research purposes. They always had great fundamentals so if you followed the Buffet/ Ben Graham model, you had to end up with them.
Most dippers quit because their mates demand it. I am sure that it is a good thing, but it is also quantifiable. Most guys that get married, are forced to quit, enough said. That is a fact, the companies are well aware of this.

if you truly need it, go find it. There is always a way. I know there are times when things can't be done, I know people can go threw real hardship. But if it is feasible, and you need it, make it happen. It is Spring, you can find some sun I hope.
